- The Lakshmi Lamp - It's Significance… LIGHT A LAMP - Brighten your life... The Gaja Lakshmi Lamp Oil lamps have represented spirit and spiritual ideas since ancient times. They have continued to burn in temples, cathedrals, mosques, synagogues, churches, and other locations where the faithful gather for worship, prayer or meditation. The lamp contains an oil and a wick and, when lit, it provides a source of life for several hours or even days. The light produced by the lamp may illustrate the illumination provided by spiritual insight, the presence of divinity or it may symbolize the continuation of life. Regardless of its meaning, the oil lamp has a place in all of the world's major religions. The Oil Lamp in Hinduism is considered as a female form of God. In India the Oil Lamp represents Mother Lakshmi. The Lakshmi Lamp that's used in most Hindu homes in South Africa is called the Gaja Lakshmi Lamp (like the picture above). In Hindu Dharma, Elephants are symbols of wealth. Gaja-Lakshmi, that is the Lakshmi form with elephants, is one of the most significant aspects of Mother Lakshmi. In this aspect, Ma is depicted seated on a lotus, flanked on both side by an elephant (gaja). Ma is shown as seated in Padma-asana (lotus position) yogic posture, and has four arms. In each of Her upper pair of arms, She carries a lotus, and the lower hands are in ABHYA i.e the gesture of reassurance and safety, is a hand pose, which dispels fear and accords divine protection and bliss to Her devotee, and varada-mudra i.e. a gesture by the hand and symbolizes dispensing of boons. For varada-mudra, the left hand is used. It is held out, with Her palm uppermost and the fingers pointing downwards. The elephants flanking Ma are shown as pouring water from their trunk over Ma Lakshmi. This aspect like most other aspects of Mother Lakshmi is representative of prosperity, good luck, and abundance; and the Gaja-Lakshmi motifs are very common in Hindu iconography. The lamp also signifies light over darkness. So when you are in a prayer room or temple, you are trying to clear your clouded mind, and hence, the lighting of lamp is symbolic. Light symbolizes the absence of darkness and unhappiness and shows us a way out of problems, difficulties and tensions and brings us luck, wealth and happiness. Light a lamp daily AND drive out evil and invite different kinds of all conceivable wealth to yourself and you North:- You will be blessed with 8 kinds of wealth or Ashta-ishwaryas. Ensures success in everything you do. OFFICE SET UP ACCORDING TO VASTHU

Office

If office faces the east, entrance door is to be from the northeast, and head of office should face the east or north at southwest corner. If office faces the north, entrance door is to be from the northeast and head of institution should face the east or north If office faces the west, entrance should be from the northwest corner, head of office may sit facing any direction leaving space on northeast corner. But it is better to sit facing the nearest junction. If office faces the south, the head of institution must face the east at southwest corner with entrance from the southeast corner

FEW IDEAS ABOUT VASTHU.

First and foremost Vaastu Sastra is not a religion but a science. The philosophy and concept of Vaastu Sastra has more to do with complex mathematical calculations along with the energy lines of the earth. Faith is not a prerequisite to success. Instead effective creation of energy and positive vibration, flow of balance and harmony are required.

The Principles
Vaastu Sastra is based on precepts laid down thousands of years ago in the Indian classics like the Puranas and Vedas. It concerns the order - the harmony of heaven and earth and ways in which we as humans can keep the balance of humans intact. Few examples (just skimming over and touching the basic principles of Vaastu Sastra - only to make a person aware of what exactly it pertains to) are listed below.

While buying a site :
1. Select a site where the land is fertile and not dry and rocky. 2. Avoid water logged land or a site at the end of a road. 3. Avoid land too close to graveyards, cemeteries, crematoria or hospitals.

Building a house :
1. Regular shapes in houses with squares and rectangles are far superior to angular houses with protrusions or L-shaped and V-shaped structures. 2. Avoid U-shaped houses. People in these would face a great deal of hardship and unhappiness. 3. Avoid triangular shaped houses that have too many corners. The angles are not conducive in attracting positive energy.

Doors :
1. The main door of a house should never directly face a church, temple or cemetery. 2. The door formula states that the number of doors inside a house should be even in numbers and not odd numbers. They should not end in zero. There should be an odd number of doors in line. 3. When doors face each other, make sure they face each other directly.

Staircases :
1. A staircase should never begin in front of the main door nor end directly in front of a upstairs door. 2. Staircases should ideally be curved gently rather than straight. 3. Spiral staircases are not auspicious.

Industries :
1. The land for an industry as advised by our Ancient Masters should not be where the air is stale, where plants cannot flourish, where soil is dry and lifeless, where surroundings are harsh and threatening and where shapes of hills are sharp and pointed. 2. The main shed or building should be constructed in the south west sector of the entire land leaving more space in the north and east direction and less space in the south west direction. 3. The overhead water tank should be located in the north east sector. 4. The raw material should be stored in the western area and the finished goods in the north west sector. Just a few of the basic principles of Vaastu Sastra have be touched on. There is a lot more to be studied and understood in detail for the best results. This may be further discussed if required. Do remember that Vaastu Sastra is not magic. It does not have instant results. It is necessary to be patient and allow time for the positive energy and currents from the cosmos to enter the home or office and industry and await harmony and balance. Vaastu should be looked upon as a science and ancient wisdom that has survived through centuries.

Vastu Tips for Financial Steability: If the right rules of Vastu is followed, it will never let your finances to stagnate or dwindle. The article comes up with some very favorable Vastu tips for making good money and succeeding in any commercial venture. Go through the Vasthu advice and flourish in life.  “Kubera Moolai” THE CORNER OF WEALTH:- The main cause of financial flash or crash creates from the south-west corner for a place, which is called in Tamil as “Kubera Moolai” meaning THE CORNER OF WEALTH. The financial position crashes if there is any construction of sump, septic tank, bore well, well, or any structure which is below the earth in the south-west corner of the house, shop and office. The financial position flashes high if there is any construction of over head tank, bed room, store room, office, shop and elevated room. The almirahs and safety lockers in which jewelry, valuables and important papers are kept should be positioned very carefully, according to Vastu Shastra. The ideal location is at the west-side wall, facing the east, or a southwest corner facing the east or the north. Locating the safety locker at the south wall facing the north also brings good fortune. The door of the locker should preferably open to the north, which is the direction of Kubera (God of Wealth) as per Vastu. Do not place the locker in north-east corner as it would cause loss of wealth. South-east and north-west corner are also not preferred either as it can lead to unnecessary expenditure. Make sure that the safety locker is not placed under the beam as it causes extreme pressure on financial stability. The north-east corner is other source causing prosperity and wealth to flourish. This corner is called in Tamil as “Eeshanya Moolai” meaning THE CORNER OF GOD. The development and stability of a place is guaranteed if well, bore well, sump for storing water is constructed in the north-east corner of the house and plot. The overhead tank, when constructed in the north-east portion of the house causes severe down pour of ill luck and worsens the financial position. Fish aquariums kept in the south-west corner of the hall are very positive for wealth.  The fishes are to be attractive. Choose some active and healthy fish and try to make sure that they are strong swimmers and active. Keep the water dirt free and aerated. The constant movement of fish will keep the energy of wealth on the move. If the plot is very close to Shiva, Vishnu or Shakti or any temple and its shadow falls on the plot or house in the north or east direction, it reduces the vibration. There should not be a temple, mosque, church, high raise buildings or mountains on the North-east side or straight ahead of the gate which may cause financial loss. Financial loss is sure to come if  there is considerably less open space in the north-east side of the building or heavy machinery etc. have been installed in the north-east portion of the plot. The elder or earning member or head of the family is must never occupy the north-east portion of the house. The road in the front of the building shall not be higher than the floor inside the building. The plot should not be facing any road considered to effect ill luck. Some roads cause bad sign of financial loss, only some roads favor good luck. The slope of the floor of the building is favorable towards the north-east corner compared to the south-west corner. Bad luck comes with misfortune, if there is a damaged building exactly opposite to the gate or main door of the house. The east portion of the house shall not be higher than the west portion of the house, considering both floor level and building level. The north or east side compound wall of the building should never be constructed as curved. Never place the overhead tank in the middle. This place is known as the Brahmasthanam. If there is load on the Brahma, life of the individuals living in the house would be choked. The building or the house shall not be constructed mainly or only in the east and north side. Tall and huge trees planted in the north-east side of the house blocking morning sunlight, imbalance financial stability. Tall and huge trees planted in the south-west side of the house prevents from misfortunes and improves balance of financial stability The well, bore well and sump in the southeast, south, west, or south-west of the house or building creates a bad vibration and causes ill health and financial loss. Store room in the house or office building is in the north-east of the plot. Keep the doors and windows clean and sparkling, as dirty glass restricts the flow of money. Drainage pipes should be fitted in the east or the north area of factories, offices or residences. Overhead tank in the south-east corner is a bad omen and results in loss of wealth and accidents. A Water Fountain at the north-east corner of the house or hall with gentle sound of the water flowing provides positive energy to the rooms and also increases the inflow of money. Worship of Shiva lingam is considered the prime worship for the devotees of Lord Shiva. The significance of the “Jyotir Shiva lingam” is that it is the glorious light (flame) form of the Supreme - solidified to make the worship of it easier. Lord Vishnu is the supreme God of Vaishnavism, which is a division of Hindu religion. 108 Vishnu Sthalams are called as "Divyadesams". Every Hindu must visit these all temples and get Lord Vishnu’s blessings to get “Moksha” and peaceful life. Six temples called “The Arupadai Veedu” are considered to be the battle camps of Lord Muruga. The ancient Hindu legends and Puranas are associated with each of these temples of Lord Muruga. Goddess Parvati is the main female Goddess in Hinduism. Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati. There are 52 temples or Holy places called “Shakti Peetas” which are very important for goddess Parvati.

*  Heater, switchboard, all other electrical appliances should be in the south-east direction.
*  If a change room is to be built in the bathroom, it should be in the west or the south direction.
*  Tub baths in the bathrooms should be either in the east, the west or the north-east.
*  The slope of the flooring in the bathrooms should be in the east or the north direction.
*  The mirrors & the doors of the bathroom should be in the east or the north, but not in the south direction.
*  There should be windows or ventilators in the east or the north. Bath should be taken in the east or the north side.
*  Clothes to be washed, should be kept in the north-west corner
*  The colour of walls and tiles of the bathrooms should be white, light blue, sky blue or any other pleasing light colour. As far as possible dark red or black colour should be avoided.
*  A toilet in the bathroom is not advisable. However, if it is, it should be in the west or the north-west.

The north area of your bedroom is the wealth area. Confused about directions? Get a compass and locate your north direction. It is better to keep all your cash and belongings in this area as this ensures that you attract more wealth.
And while you are trying to drag that almirah to the north, also make sure that the door of the cup board is not facing your bedroom door.

VASTHU TIPS FOR PROSPERITY

In doing Vastu of any place , home, work place, building, factory, land or plot we try to harmonize the place with respect to the five basic elements called as Panchbhoota namely Air, Water, Fire, Earth and Space. We shall discuss about importance of each of this element and how well we can harmonize them to relieve a stressful life, bringing 3 P's viz peace, protection and prosperity in our lives.

• WATER: Water bodies in north or east are considered good. As far as the flow of domestic water is concerned, it should be borne in mind and that such water should be drained out in North - East. Wells, tubewells, swimming pools etc. should all be in the North-East. The water from the toilets and bathrooms, too, should be drained out in the North- East. The North-East direction is always auspicious and suitable for water. There are sewer-systems in the cities. The Septic tanks or the flow of sewer systems should be towards North - West. The flow of rain or fresh water should be towards North-East.
• FIRE: The direction of Fire is South-East. The Kitchen, fireplace, geysers etc. should be placed only in this direction. Alternatively these could be placed in North-West, because it is at 180 degree to South-East. The Vastu Fire Element One can take care of the South-East Corners of all rooms and aim for Hapiness in the family, Good Health, Sound Finances, and Nice Married Life. As South-East belongs to Agni he can create enough trouble for inmates. The South-East corner of every room should be taken care of it. One can keep Agni - Vastu Fire Element cheerful by having a spotlight or lantern in the South-East corner with light or burning flame pointing to the roof. One can have the Electrical gadgets like Television, VCR, Fridge, Computer, Fire-place, Microwaves, radio etc placed in South-East corner.
• AIR: The air should enter the building from North -East. All the openings and media for air entry such as doors, windows, ventilators coolers, air-conditioners, verandahs, balconies etc. should be in this directions.
• SPACE OR OPEN SKY:  The open sky influences greatly. We can get the effect of terrestrial-energies uninterruptedly. But the buildings prove a barrier to the effects of open sky. Therefore, the importance of roofs or lawns gets emphasized, but the Vastu shastra has refrained from deliberating in detail over it, because it is related chiefly to building construction and we will discuss only this aspect. Traditionally every house in India used to have an open space (Court Yard) in the center of the house. It provided the dwellers not only the open sky but also sunlight and cross-ventilation of air.
• SHAPE OF PLOT: Favourites are regular shaped square or rectangular plota AND irregular shaped plots are normally avoided.
• OBSTRUCTION: Obstruction like big trees, open well, pillars and posts before a arrow like roads are to be avoided.
• IDEAL SITE: A building should be constructed preferably in a square plot the house should be constructed in the for house centre and in rectangular plot it should be nearer to construction south, south west and west sides preferably leaving more in a plot open space on north and east. "L" or Considered not suitable for house as corners will be "U" shaped missing and occupants will be missing opportunities.

VASTHU TIPS FOR THE PEACE AND PROSPERITY

1. When sitting for worship, keep your face towards North-West and sit in that corner to intake air from that direction.
   
2. Cash boxes can be located in the room towards the North (treasury). But if the box is heavy (such as a safe, heavy almirah) then it should be kept in the Southwest corner and the door of the almirah should open towards the North.
   
3. TVs and computers should ideally be placed in the Southeast corner of the living room or study room. They should not be placed in the Northeast corner or Southwest corner.
   
4. Telephones can be placed in the Southeast or Northwest corner but not in the Southwest or Northeast.
   
5. An aquarium with 9 gold fish and one black fish, in the north east corner/portion of the house or factory is very good.
   
6. If the north-east area is untidy or unshapely, the well being of male issues is found to be precarious.
   
7. One should sleep with his head pointing towards the South.
   
8. Students should be facing east while studying, for Academic Excellence.
   
9. If the kitchen is off the proper place, some member or the other is always found to be suffering from severe digestive disorder.
   
10. Keep the Gas in the south east corner of the kitchen.
    
11. Person should face the east while cooking.
    
12. Drinking water should be in the north east of the kitchen.
    
13. While Taking meals the plate should be in South-East.
    
14. A house should not have paintings, which depicts depressing scenes, i.e. like an old woman crying, scenes of war or poverty. It should have picture of say, a sunrise, an ocean, mountains, flowers or laughing children.
    
15. Tall trees are nowhere recommended close to the main building. For trees the south in itself is good and so is the west. No tree should be grown in the north and the east. The one at the north-east is the worst.
    
16. Small decorative plants and shrubs may be grown in the north and the east. The height should not exceed, say, half a meter at the north-east increasing gradually to not more than 1.5 meter as one moves from the north-east to the north-west or to the south-east end.
    
17. Except rose and a few medicinal ones, all thorny plants give rise to tensions in the environment. Plants exuding white sap should also be kept off. Lime and karonda etc. are OK in an orchard but not in residence or business premises.
    
18. Amongst the beneficial plants, the best is Tulsi. It is commendable to keep at least one Tulsi plant in the north-east area of the premises, but its height should not exceed 1.5 meter.
    
19. Growing creepers/climbers with support on the compound wall or a house wall is best avoided.
    
20. If north of any house is blocked it blocks prosperity.

The first and foremost criteria for buying a property should be the direction of entry.  In the plans shown marked as 1,2,3,4…the following are observed. 

1. North facing plot, main gate at A
2. East facing plot, main gate at B
3. South facing plot, main gate at C
4. West facing plot, main gate at D

THE VASTHU ARRANGEMENTS IN THE HOUSE

KITCHEN

Kitchen should not be made near or opposite the bathroom or toilet  Kitchen should not be opposite to the main entrance  Kitchen should not be below the staircase.  Raw food like wheat, ghee etc should be stored in the east  Kitchen should be made in southeast corner. Alternatively, it could be in the west side  Cooking appliances are to be kept in southeast corner in the kitchen  Loft or boxes can be made in any side of the kitchen  Heavy weight utensils should be kept against the south wall  While preparing food the person should face east  Refrigerator could be kept in south east, west or north side, but not in the northwest corner  Dining room can be made in west side of the kitchen  The electric appliances should be fixed at southeast corner  Fire equipments should be afixed in the southeast corner  DRAWING ROOM/FAMILY ROOM Hang a painting of the rising sun or of natural beauty on the wall Furniture should not be kept touching the east or north sidewall East north corner should be kept empty The head of the family should face east or north Round shaped furniture should not be used Any heavy Elmira or bookrack should be in the south or west wall A/C or room heater should be fixed in the southeast wall Study table should be kept in north, northwest or northeast Water Cooler should never be kept in southeast Clocks should not be hung on the south wall BED-ROOM Use southwest corner room for the elder members  Always sleep with your head in the east or south side  While sleeping, your legs should not face the main gate  Avoid having direct light falling on your eyes while sleeping  Door should be of a single wood  It would be benefical for students to sleep in the west side  There should be no beam in the bedroom  Beds should be kept away from the walls  There should be no locker in the bedroom  Always keep the lockers in west or south side, so that the door of locker should always opens behind the north side or east side  Keep money in the north side  Locker used to keep money should be facing north direction  Build Almirah’s and wardrobes in the west or in south.  DINING ROOM Dining room should be located in south, west, and east  Always use pink or orange or cream colors in the dining room  If your dining room is in any other direction then you should have food in the west side of the room  Dining room can be made in west side of the kitchen  GUEST ROOM Northwest rooms are ideal for guests.  DOORS No big stone, pillar or waste box should be in front of any door  Main door should never open in front of another house door  Kitchen should not be built opposite the main entrance  Doors should not be in south  COMPOUND The thickness of the walls in the Southwest side should be thicker then the other walls  The construction work should proceed from east side to southward and then move to west northward  Garage should be built in northwest or southeast corner  Avoid any shadow on the main gate  The Kitchen should not be made opposite the main entrance  Trees should not be planted in front of the main gate  If required the mezzanine floors should be built in the west or south BASEMENT Basement should be built in the east, north or northeast side.  The depth of basement should be less than or equal to that of ground floor.  It is would be better to limit all construction in the middle of the basement field.  Leave equal spaces in all the four fields.
